Shiok Kitchen Catering suspended after 95 people fall ill with gastroenteritis

SINGAPORE: Shiok Kitchen Catering had its operations suspended from Thursday (Dec 14) after 95 people were hit by gastroenteritis.

Those affected fell ill after consuming food prepared by the catering service between Dec 7 and Dec 8, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) in a joint statement.

They either sought outpatient treatment, self-medicated or recovered without treatment.

None were hospitalised, said the authorities, adding that the illnesses were sparked by two incidents. Investigations are ongoing.

Gastroenteritis, more commonly known as stomach flu, usually causes diarrhoea and vomiting.

Given the suspected ongoing transmission, SFA said it has suspended the food business operations of Shiok Kitchen Catering at 1 Senoko Avenue with immediate effect until further notice.

“The licensee is required to clean and sanitise the premises, including equipment and utensils, and dispose all ready-to-eat food and perishable food items,” said the authorities.

All food handlers and hygiene officers working in the premises are also required to reattend and pass food safety courses before they can resume their work.

SFA reminded all food operators to observe good food and personal hygiene at all times.

“SFA will not hesitate to take firm action against anyone found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act,” said the agency.

It also advised members of the public who come across poor hygiene practices in food establishments to not patronise such outlets and to report them via SFA’s online feedback form.
