SINGAPORE: Singapore has been invited by Brazil to participate in the G20 Summit and meetings in 2024.
Brazil took over the G20 presidency from India on Dec 1 and will hold next year’s summit in Rio de Janeiro from Nov 18 to 19.
“Singapore appreciates the invitation from Brazil, which reflects our excellent relations and close cooperation at multilateral fora,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) in a joint press statement on Saturday (Dec 2).
“We enjoy deepening collaboration in areas such as trade and investment, innovation, education, climate change and sustainability.
“Singapore will continue to actively contribute to the G20 process, both in our national capacity and as Convenor of the Global Governance Group (3G).”
The Global Governance Group is an informal group of 30 smaller and medium-sized members of the United Nations, established to promote stronger linkages between the G20 and UN member nations.
While Singapore is not a G20 member, it has for over 10 years been invited to participate in the summit and its related meetings.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong attended the G20 Summit hosted by India in September 2023 and in Bali in 2022.
Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said that his country will focus on reducing hunger and poverty, slowing climate change and global governance reform when it heads the G20 group of the world’s largest economies.
“I hope we can address the issues that we need to stop running away from and try to resolve,” Lula said at a meeting with cabinet ministers in November to lay out Brazil’s priorities for the G20.
In the Singapore press statement, MFA and MOF said: “We look forward to work constructively with the Brazilian presidency and other G20 members and guests to realise Brazil’s priorities of building a just world and a sustainable planet.
“These include issues such as promoting social inclusion and fighting hunger, managing energy transition and sustainable development, and reforming global governance.”
