Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer and physicist whose telescopic observations provided key evidence for the heliocentric model of the solar system, bringing him into direct conflict with the Catholic Church.

Improving the Telescope
Galileo did not invent the telescope, but he significantly improved its design in 1609, achieving magnification levels far beyond earlier instruments and turning it toward the night sky for serious scientific observation for the first time.
Revolutionary Astronomical Discoveries
Using his improved telescope, Galileo discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter, observed the changing phases of Venus, and documented mountains and craters on the surface of Earth's own Moon — observations that provided strong support for the Copernican model of a Sun-centered solar system.
Conflict with the Church
Galileo's public advocacy for heliocentrism directly contradicted the Catholic Church's official teaching that the Earth sat motionless at the center of the universe. He was tried by the Roman Inquisition in 1633, forced to formally recant his views, and spent the remainder of his life under house arrest.
Foundations of Modern Physics
Beyond astronomy, Galileo's experiments on motion and inertia — including his famous, possibly apocryphal, experiments dropping objects from the Leaning Tower of Pisa — laid essential groundwork that Isaac Newton would later build upon to formulate his laws of motion.
Vindication
Galileo died in 1642, the same year Isaac Newton was born. It was not until 1992 that the Catholic Church formally acknowledged its error in condemning him, closing one of history's most famous conflicts between science and religious authority.
