A Monk with a Scientific Mind
Mendel joined an Augustinian monastery in Brno, in what is now the Czech Republic, where he was given the opportunity to pursue scientific study, eventually conducting his groundbreaking plant-breeding experiments in the monastery's garden between 1856 and 1863.
Thousands of Pea Plants
Mendel meticulously crossbred tens of thousands of pea plants over nearly a decade, carefully tracking specific, easily observable traits such as seed color, seed shape, and plant height across multiple generations, applying a level of statistical rigor unusual for biology at the time.
Discovering the Laws of Inheritance
Through this painstaking work, Mendel identified consistent, predictable patterns in how traits were passed from parent plants to offspring, formulating what became known as Mendelian inheritance, including the foundational concepts of dominant and recessive traits.
