Early Life

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer) and Thomas Cruise Mapother III. He was raised alongside three sisters. His family relocated frequently during his childhood due to his father's work, and Cruise attended numerous schools across the United States and Canada. He struggled with dyslexia throughout his education. After briefly considering a career in the priesthood, Cruise pursued acting after moving to New York City at age 18.

Career Beginnings

Cruise made his film debut with a minor role in Endless Love (1981). His early career gained momentum with Taps (1981) and The Outsiders (1983). He achieved his first major commercial breakthrough with Risky Business (1983), in which he starred opposite Rebecca De Mornay. His role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun (1986) established him as one of Hollywood's leading stars and was a significant box-office success.

Rise to Prominence

Cruise has been married three times. He was married to actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, to actress Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001, and to actress Katie Holmes from 2006 to 2012. He has three children: Isabella and Connor, both adopted with Kidman, and Suri, his biological daughter with Holmes. Cruise is a prominent member of the Church of Scientology and has spoken publicly about his involvement with the organization on multiple occasions.
