Zohran Mamdani
Zohran Mamdani is an American politician who became the 112th Mayor of New York City in January 2026, making history as the city's first Muslim mayor and first mayor of South Asian descent.
Born in Kampala and raised partly in New York, Mamdani rose from a relatively obscure seat in the New York State Assembly to the most powerful municipal office in the country within the span of a single election cycle.
An Unlikely Rise
Mamdani represented Queens in the New York State Assembly from 2021 until his mayoral campaign, building a public profile around tenant rights and affordability issues before few outside his district had heard his name.
